The Hollywood Sewers Obsession

Now, we’ve already looked at the common theme of sewers in video games, but it would seem that games designers are not the only ones who can’t get enough of underground pipes – Hollywood is mad for sewer scenes, in fact, it would seem as though the sewers are just as popular as Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, so let’s show our appreciation for drains and take a look at some of the best sewers in the movies.

Les Misérables

Admittedly, Hollywood can’t really take all the credit for this one seeing as it was a book before Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe got their hands on it, but this movie features one of the greatest and most disgusting sewer scenes of all time. Javert is on the tail of Valjean/Le Maire as he drags the unconscious Marius through the filthy sewers of 19th century France… Lovely.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

We’re pretty used to seeing some of the scariest creatures known to Hollywood crawl out of the sewers, but this film helped clear the drain name when four friendly green dudes emerged from the depths. Their mission? To defeat the evil Shredder and save New York! KOWABUNGA!

Blade II

Blade is back and he’s still on the hunt for the undead, but the second instalment in the Blade trilogy sees our hero faced with a whole new breed of vampire that have spawned from, yep, you guessed it – the sewers. These super-vamps have an insatiable thirst that can’t be quenched, and if they’re to be defeated, Blade must team up with those he once hunted.

Flushed Away

This heart-warming tale (excuse the pun) tells the story of an unfortunate rat named Roddy who has the misfortune of being flushed down the toilet, only to find a bustling sewer world known as ‘Ratropolis’. Not quite the picture we had of the underground drains system, but at least the rats are friendly – well, most of them.

Finding Nemo

Who doesn’t love a film about talking fish? This film follows the adventures of Marlin as he searches for his son Nemo who has found his way into a dentist’s fish tank. As much as we all loved the film, we can’t help but be a little disappointed that it spread the belief that the best way to dispose of a dead or sick fish is to flush it down the toilet. Don’t flush your fish! Not only is it cruel and inhumane if the fish is still alive, it can also cause disease to spread into the water system and to other creatures it comes into contact with.

*Honourable TV Mention*

Stephen King’s ‘It’

Now, if you’re not a fan of murderous clowns, you might want to look away now as this may be the most terrifying thing to have ever crawled out of the drains. Pennywise is a demon clown who spends his free time feeding on children’s fears and killing them. Now that sounds like some fun Friday night viewing!

Be warned, the video below features a scary clown with pointy teeth – watch at your own risk!
