The Science Behind Unblocking Your Drains

In the average household, your toilet, sink, bath and shower all empty into the exact same waste pipe. From here it makes its way into the sewers until it’s cleaned up and returned to rivers and other streams of water.

However, it doesn’t always go to plan.

Discovering that there is a problem with your drains can be extremely irritating, especially because it always seems to happen at the worst possible time. It’s also not a particularly nice experience either – to see and smell.

What Causes Blockages?

There are a number of different reasons for why your drains may be playing up. The main reason is often because of things being flushed down the toilet or down the sink that definitely don’t belong there. Your drains (and the sewers) are designed to handle on a few specific things, such as water and human waste. Everything else must be disposed of properly.

This includes items such as the following.

  • Fat and oil
  • Nappies
  • Wipes
  • Sanitary products

Failure to do this is what leaves you with the foul smelling sign of a blocked drain.

So What Happens Next?

When you discover that you have a problem with your drains, it’s essential that you call a drainage professional as soon as possible. They will know exactly what needs to be done to stop the problem from getting any more serious.

Drain Test

As blocked drain specialists, the first thing that we would do after being called out is to check the drains to pinpoint the exact problem. We do this by carrying out a drain test. This is when we can’t see what is happening down in the drains but we need to find out the source of the problem.

Sometimes it requires a little more digging to get to the root of the problem – this is when we introduce the CCTV survey.

What’s a CCTV Survey?

As the name suggests, this involves checking out the drains using a hand pushed camera or by using a crawler system. This is a cost effective and non disruptive way of looking into your drains and finding the cause of the blockage. The camera is fed down the pipes, allowing us to view everything along the way. Once our engineer has all the pictures, they’ll be able to identify the root of the problem – allowing us to get it fixed ASAP!

We’ve Figured out the Problem….What Now?

Once we know what the issue is, we can then take appropriate action in order to fix the problem as quickly as possible. We have an extensive amount of tools to aid us in unblocking the drain effectively and in the most cost effective way. These most popular way of clearing a blocked drain is by carrying out drain jetting.

Drain jetting is a long term solution that can help solve your current problem and the risk of it occurring again in the future. It involves using a high pressure water system to clean the drains. It’s that powerful, it will cut through any type of blockage, including chunks of trees.

This should clear the obstruction in your drain – and give it a good clean! If this doesn’t automatically fix the problem, there are a number of other tests that we can carry out to get it working again.
